Narrative:
I learnt about the Todorov structure, which comprises of the following:
Equillibrium - shows characters in their usual everyday environment, sets the scene, but also opens questions.
Disruption - Something happens to interrupt/change the equillibrium, and something must be done to revert this. Somebody/a group of people set(s) out to do this.
Conflict - The protagonist(s) meet the antagonist(s)/encounter what has been causing the disruption, and a fight (either physical or metaphorical)/negotiation happens between the two rival groups/the protagonist(s) find out what must be done to resolve the issues.
Resolution - the issues are resolved, the antagonist(s) has/have been dealt with, in a way the film is taken back to the equillibrium but the characters are more aware of dangers that may lay ahead (cause+effect)
Genre
Different stylistics, codes and conventions etc. and how they could be challenged and how they have been in the past
In genres such as film noir, horror etc. and audience expectations of these genres
Mise-en-scene:
Costume - Clothing which can reflect meaning e.g. black to reflect evil, mystery, death depending on the genre and narrative
Props - weaponary such as guns and knives, connoting death, and torches to explore abandoned houses
Lighting - reflects on character's personality
Cinematography:
Close up shots, mid-shots, panning, tracking, angles, tilt
Editing:
Continuity editing - making sure that everything flows, so that clothing and objects don't change from shot to shot without explanation
Montage - clips that reflect something happening within the story over a long period of time e.g. preparing oneself for a task or characters mourning over the loss of a loved one, usually silent with non-diagetic music playing over it, reflecting the mood of the montage.
Jump cuts - a very slight deliberate camera "movement" which is in fact two seperate shots, suggests something isn't right
Sound:
Diagetic - Sound coming from the diagesis.
Non-diagetic - Sound outside of the diagesis e.g. narration
Music: Crescendo
