Synopsis

My movie title: Silent Village

Synopsis:
In a small peaceful village named Deville, a number of residents suddenly go missing. The families of those who disappeared are puzzled and upset, but they ultimately regard the disappearances as coincidences. However, teenager Demetria, a horror film buff, believes there is a sinister reason behind them, and gathers a small group of friends to inspect, against their parents’ wishes. They split up and search in and around the few unoccupied houses and fields in the village for clues. Demetria’s friends also vanish one by one. She becomes the only one left, desperately trying to look for her friends in the areas they investigated, but she vanishes from the village herself, finding herself inside a dark area inhabited by a lone creature. She finds that it’s the last of its kind due to its race having died of starvation, picking Deville for its unsuspecting residents and devouring them for food. Demetria severely maims the creature after it tries killing her, and it sends her back to Deville. It then dies from its injuries, never to harm the human race again. Demetria struggles to adjust to normal life after the deaths of many of her friends, but has gained much more awareness of the dangers that may lay ahead in her future. She is now much more protective over those she has left in her life.

Equillibrium: A small peaceful village with a suspicious sounding name, Deville. Thought to be a danger free area.
Disruption: Something has made its impact on the village, causing the disappearance of several of its citizens.
Conflict: A teenager (conventional horror film protagonist) and horror-movie buff named Dominic decides to investigate with a small group of friends to try and discover what is causing the disappearaces, against their parents' wishes. Due to the usually quiet nature of the village others consider the disappearances to be a pure coincidence. However, they continues the quest, searching abandoned houses (stereotypical horror film setting) for possible clues. Demetria's friends go missing and when she frantically tries searching for them she disappears too. She finds herself in a dark area with a lone creature.
Climax: She begins to discover the true intentions of the creature, who is discovered to be the last creature of its kind. It's using human life as a food source, picking Deville specifically for its unsuspecting victims
Resolution: After the creature tries killing Demetria she ends up severely maiming it. It eventually dies of its injuries. Demetria can return home.
New Equillibrium: Demetria and the rest of the village are now more aware of potential dangers that could lay ahead.

The scene I am going to film will be part of the conflict. In fitting with the genre conventions, I will use shots (such as jump cuts) and sound (e.g. asynchronous diagetic) that startle the viewer

Characters:
(Featured in sequence) the protagonist Demetria, the person who believes there is something sinister behind the series of disappearances.
(Others in film): her friends, various family members, opening scene will feature character going missing, the antagonist creature causing the disappearances

Cinematography:
Medium shots for the opening of doors, showing hints of surroundings, setting the scene.
Several close ups of facial expressions, reflecting emotions and reactions to what is found or heard
Tracking shots, following character, tricks audience into thinking we're safe exploring with the protagonist

Editing:
Jump cuts to indicate fright, reflects her fear, shows something is inside of the house hiding itself
Fast paced shots when something sinister is nearby or if that is possible, reflects protagonist's and audience's fears

Mise en scene:
A torch in hand for protagonist to use
Damaged tables, chairs, abandoned items, teared wallpaper

Lighting:
Dark, lighting generated mostly (if not completely) from torch

Colour:
Hints of red e.g. on the wall, reflecting danger, but also blood, indicating disappearances, or even deaths, have happened there

Sound:
Diagetic:
Footsteps echoing, doors creaking, creates a haunting atmosphere

Non Diagetic:
Eerie music soundtrack

Props needed:
A torch

Film locations:
A dark, abandoned house, with rooms to explore, stylstic of a horror film

My chosen Film Genre

The genre of Film that my project falls under will be horror.

These kind of films seek to gain a negative emotional reaction from audience members by playing on their primal fears. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer, and the macabre (use of grim/ghastly mise en scene) and the supernatural (that which isn't subject to the laws of nature) are common themes. Therefore they can possibly overlap with the fantasy, supernatural, and thriller genres.

Horror films often deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Themes or elements prevalent in horror films include ghosts, vampires, werewolves, curses, satanism, demons, gore, torture, vicious animals, monsters, zombies, cannibals, and serial killers. Conversely, stories of the supernatural are not necessarily always a horror movie as well.
